For a wedding in Jackson Hole, Wyo., the decor was inspired by the beautiful ranch setting. A chuppah made of aspen tree poles and a simple cream fabric framed a view of a pond without detracting from the naturally gorgeous surroundings. Instead of over-the-top florals, pockets of wildflowers were planted around the property. Hay bales were used in innovative ways; for example, they were stacked and topped with an old barn door to create a bar or coffee table, and they were covered with fabric or cowhides to create casual couches.
When you have nature as your backdrop, less is sometimes more. Incorporate natural elements in an understated, elegant manner. For example, instead of renting a standard white cocktail platter to pass hors d’oeuvres, use thin cross-sections of tree trunks. Tree stumps that are level can also work great as side tables. Allow the grass to grow long everywhere; paths where the guests walk and congregate is an inexpensive but powerful design element.
