We have a very special photo gallery today: the wedding of Julie and Joey, one of the $10,000 winners of our Recessionista wedding contest.
Here’s their story:
When Julie and Joey first started dating, they realized they had the same week off for vacation, so for their third date, they went to France. (How’s that for romance?) While there, they regularly dined on local market fare while picnicking alongside the Siene River. When they returned home, Joey eventually proposed to Julie during a romantic picnic. So a French picnic theme was a natural fit for their October wedding in Phoenix. And the idea was a winner with our voters.
Not that it was all smooth sailing. Two weeks before their wedding, the two were told their park wedding venue had changed the schedule for planting winter grass — you guessed it — on Julie and Joey’s wedding date. No contract had been signed, so this meant the two couldn’t use the park for their wedding.
Since it’s rare to find an available venue with two week’s notice, the two decided to think outside the box. A friend recommended the apartment complex Villa Palavacini, which had olive trees and a vineyard. Turns out, “It was even better than our original park,” Joey says. Thankfully, too, the staff was gracious and helpful. They even closed down the office and model apartments the day of the wedding so the couple could use those areas to prepare.
Winning our contest, too, made a huge difference to the couple. They were paying for their wedding mostly on their own. “We just chose a date and figured out how much we would have to work until that date, and we knew we would be able to make enough to cover the costs,” Joey tells us. “We also knew that we may not see each other again until the wedding.” So winning the contest allowed Joey and Julie to spend time together finalizing the details of the wedding, instead of spending that time apart working to pay for it. It was also enough to cover their honeymoon!
